With a passion for healthy land, people and animals we have set out to make every effort to heal the land, raise healthy livestock, provide wholesome products, build community, and support all life on our ranch. Our mission is to raise our livestock as nature intended with as few inputs as possible and with very little resource waste. We are continually increasing the diversity on our ranch and we mimic nature as often as we can. This means not wasting resources on agrochemicals that harm the environment and not wasting diesel harvesting and hauling feed to cattle in confinement, two practices we see very often in the commercial meat production system. With our practices the cattle and sheep can harvest their food themselves, just as nature intended.
Every decision we make must benefit the animals and the land. One of our long-term land regeneration goals is to increase species diversity in pastures. This includes not only grasses and forbs but also trees, insect life, and birds. Our farm is a functioning agroecosystem based on promoting life. We don’t use agrochemicals or practices that kill or harm members of the agroecosystem. We have taken the time and dedication to not miss the fine intricacies of producing the best tasting meat in the most ecologically beneficial way.
We dream of a day that farm to table living will not only be the best option but the only option. Our customers know where their meat comes from and how it was produced. We aim to serve conscious consumers who desire an enjoyable and flavorful alternative to standard commodity meat products. Eating clean meat protein raised right is something we can all do to take care of ourselves. Our animals graze a lot of medicinal plants (plantain, chicory, alfalfa, artemisia and asteraceae families, etc.) in the pasture, and we believe that really carries over in the meat.
We practice management intensive grazing during the growing season. This means our flock is moved around our pasture in electrified portable net fencing. We move these paddocks every 12 to 36 hours depending on the forage and grazing conditions. The cows are grazed in a similar fashion, but we use a single strand of electric poly wire and they are moved every 24 to 48 hours. This ensures that there is always premium feed in front of the animals and helps to mitigate many issues such as problems with pest, underproductive/overgrazed pastures, overall animal condition and so much more. Living in the arid Southwest it is also a great tool for mitigating drought. During the non growing season our animals are free to roam the pasture and are feed 100% no-spray (chemical free) hay when they are not grazing the winter stock pile (standing grass in the field) we leave in our pastures during the fall.
